St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in the Keller/Southlake area welcomes the Rev. Susan Slaughter to its staff as an assisting priest. Slaughter’s ministry will include pastoral care, preaching and celebrating the Holy Eucharist, and some teaching. “As our church is growing and our needs are expanding, we are delighted to welcome Susan as part of our team,” says the Rev. Scot McComas, St. Martin’s rector.
Slaughter has come to St. Martin-in-the-Fields after many years of serving as a priest and deacon in our diocese. She is particularly interested in pastoral care and enjoys facilitating Bible studies. She delights in helping people recognize and develop the ministries to which God is calling them.
Slaughter has a history of faithful service in our diocese. She served St. Luke’s in the Meadow Episcopal Church on the east side of Fort Worth as a deacon for seven years. When it became possible for women to be ordained to the priesthood in the diocese, she had the extraordinary privilege to become the first woman in the diocese to be ordained as a priest. She served as St. Luke’s rector for four years until her retirement at the end of 2013. She has introduced, coordinated and supervised Stephen Ministry at two parishes and has served on various diocesan committees including the Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, and Committee on Constitution and Canons. Following her retirement, Slaughter served as a pastoral care assisting priest at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth and has been a supply priest in the diocese.
Slaughter received her seminary education at Anglican School of Theology in Dallas and Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Prior to her ordination, she raised a family, was a speech pathologist in two school districts, earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, taught psychology at a private trade college, and was an interim coordinator of Parents Anonymous.
Slaughter is enjoying getting to know the staff and people at St. Martin-in-the-Fields and looks forward to serving among them.
