Tarrant Churches Together honoring Coach Robert Hughes

Tarrant Churches Together, an interdenominational organization of churches in the Tarrant County area, will honor Coach Robert Hughes, father of the Rev. Carlye Hughes, rector of Trinity, Fort Worth, on Thursday, October 29, 2015.

They will do so at their 2015 “Founded on Faith” banquet, 6:30-8:30 pm at the Lena Pope Amon Carter Center.

Hughes has been a long-time member of St. Simon’s Episcopal Church. Born in Bristow, Oklahoma, in 1928, he moved to Fort Worth after graduating from the University of Tulsa to take a job coaching at I.M. Terrell High School. He moved to Dunbar High School in the 1970s during desegregation and became the winningest coach in the United States in high school basketball.

During his 40+ year career, he not only coached basketball players, but he influenced students across the FWISD and the nation. His deep faith, insistence on self-discipline, and his relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the lives of countless students, colleagues, church members, and members of the wider community.

We look forward to recognizing how his faith has shaped his life – and others through him – with the 2015 Founded on Faith Award.
