On Sunday, November 13, 2016, Bishop Scott Mayer dedicated and consecrated the historic Episcopal Mission of the Ascension, home of the Episcopal Church in Wise County. The congregation has been worshiping there since May 17, 2015. Felicity Hollister also reaffirmed her baptismal vows. Nine Episcopalians gathered on Friday, February 6, 2015, to take their first steps toward forming a worshiping community in Wise County. Wise County is approximately 923 square miles, with a population of close to 60,000. Its county seat is Decatur, which is also near the county’s geographical center. In early November, two Episcopalians in Wise County reached out to the diocesan office through the “contact” feature on the diocesan website, seeking some connection with The Episcopal Church. Bishop High followed up immediately by email and later in a face-to-face conversation to discuss possibilities for establishing an Episcopal presence in Wise County.
