History

The Episcopal Diocese of Texas North Region is a welcoming, Christ-centered community of congregations committed to nurturing the ministries of the laity, deacons, priest and bishop. We strive to be transparent in all we do and accountable to God, one another and the wider church.

We cover about 24 counties in North Central Texas, with the majority of our congregations centered in the Fort Worth/Arlington. Mid-Cities, and Keller area.

The Episcopal Church in North Texas reunited with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in July 2022, becoming that diocese’s North Region, with offices in Fort Worth. The Episcopal churches in the North Region were once part of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth before that diocese left The Episcopal Church in 2008.

In February, 2009, the presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, called a Special Convention of the Diocesan Convention at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth. The Rt. Rev. Edwin “Ted” Gulick, Jr., Bishop of Kentucky, was chosen as provisional bishop and other diocesan leaders were elected. Bishop Gulick was succeeded by the Rt. Rev. C. Wallis Ohl, who was in turn, succeeded by the Rt. Rev. Rayford B, High Jr., who was elected and installed at the Diocesan Convention November 2-3, 2012, in Stephenville, TX.

In the spring of 2015, Bishop High announced his intention to retire on July 31. A special meeting of Convention was held on May 16 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Worth, and the Rt. Rev. J. Scott Mayer, bishop of Northwest Texas, was elected and installed as the fourth provisional bishop of The Episcopal Church in North Texas. He officially took office on August 1, 2015.

With the reunification with the Diocese of Texas, Mayer became Bishop Assistant for the North Region, while remaining Bishop Diocesan of the Diocese of Northwest Texas.
